Science on Tap - December 2025

Come on out to the Flathead Lake Brewing Company Pubhouse in Bigfork to kick off the start of winter with US Geological Survey Research Scientist, Erich Peitzsch. Erich is a Research Physical Scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center in West Glacier. His research focuses on snow avalanches, snowpack dynamics, and long-term changes in snow and ice across the landscape. He started with the USGS in 2007 as the lead avalanche forecaster for the Going-to-the-Sun Road Avalanche Program in Glacier National Park. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. from Montana State University, and currently leads the USGS Interagency Avalanche Research Team.

Summary: Erich will present an overview of snowpack and glacier changes across the region, highlighting research conducted by his team in Glacier National Park and the surrounding areas. His talk will cover topics such as the climate drivers of snow avalanches, historical and projected snowpack trends, and the current status of glaciers within the park.
